My Thoughts On First Looks
I have had the sincere privilege of photographing many weddings and one of the questions I get most often is, “Do you think we should do a first look?”. Now, let me preface my opinion by saying that, like every couple, every wedding is uniquely special; and whether you have a first look or wait to see each other for the first time at the ceremony, you can’t go wrong! On your wedding day, there are so many emotions going on and anticipation and excitement- first look or not, the moments you have with your partner on that day are sure to be unforgettable perfection; and no matter what the choice, I am 1000% on board with what the couple wants!
So, what do I think about first looks? They are SO special! The concern many couples have is that, if they see each other privately before the ceremony, the moment he/she/they walk down the aisle won’t be as emotional or memorable. This is absolutely not the case! The truth is, from what I have seen, the first look only ADDS to the emotion of the day. The walk down the aisle goes by so fast, so having that time together before the ceremony creates an opportunity to privately soak in and express the joy of seeing the person you love on the most precious day of your life. Then, you tear yourselves away and the anticipation of seeing them again at the ceremony only builds! Its truly a beautiful thing.
The other wonderful thing about first looks is the practical benefit of time. When you have a first look, it also opens up the opportunity to get your bridal party photos and romantics taken before the ceremony, giving you more time to celebrate, eat and dance at the reception! You’ll have more beautiful photos to cherish with your significant other and won’t need to rush between the ceremony and reception. Bonus: many couples use the time they gain from doing a first look to enjoy an intimate meal together or toast to forever with a glass of champagne before the reception.
